The traditional narrative of illness has predominantly reflected the perspectives of health professionals and researchers, often prioritising clinical parameters over patients’ lived experiences. While essential for scientific advancement, this ‘top-down’ approach has shown limitations in capturing the multidimensional nature of illness. Narrative-Based Medicine (NBM) emerged to bridge this gap, emphasising the importance of integrating patients’ stories into clinical practice. However, verbal narratives alone may fail to encapsulate the visual, emotional and sensory dimensions of illness. This chapter proposes aligning NBM with Graphic Medicine (GM), an interdisciplinary approach that combines the evocative power of comics with personal storytelling to represent illness in an accessible, empathic and multidimensional manner. By examining the affordances of comics, such as narrative non-linearity, visual-textual blending, and symbolic representation, the chapter explores how GM addresses the gaps in traditional illness narratives. Through case studies of comics authored by patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and scientific communities, the chapter highlights the medium’s potential in enhancing health communication, patient engagement and treatment adherence. The discussion concludes with a critical examination of the ethical and methodological challenges of GM, offering a nuanced understanding of its role in the evolving narrative landscape of health and illness.
