The aim of this article is to problematize the relationship between empathy and imagination in the context of a more general discussion on the topic of “eco-imagination”. Empathy is a frequently used word in our contemporary lifeworld and occupies a prominent position in current psychology studies, but the ambiguity of this term confuses the role that imagination can play in it. On the other hand, imagination is understood differently in the empiricist and phenomenological traditions, so that its nature, functions, and relation to other activities and faculties of the human soul, especially its relation to the emotional and affective realms, are very different in these different philosophical approaches. This paper will attempt to clarify and categorize the two concepts of empathy and imagination from a concrete phenomenological perspective, with reference to the work of Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka. By analyzing her proposal of imaginatio creatrix, I will examine the contribution of imagination to the four facets of empathy proposed by Mark H. Davis. Finally, I will make some concluding remarks on the new concepts of eco-imagination and ecological empathy or empathy with nature and evaluate the proposal of cognitive empathy with nature, which I will call cold empathy.
