Cleft palate and cleft lip with or without cleft palate are distinct entities with varying etiology, incidence, gender distributions, and associated genetic factors. This chapter explores the pathogenesis and embryology of cleft lip and palate, the abnormal anatomy encountered in clefts of the lip and palate, the spectrum of deformity and respective classification schemes seen in these deformities, and, finally, the various techniques for repair. Examples of treatment algorithms for cleft palate are presented and the complications of cleft lip and cleft palate repair reviewed.
