This chapter introduces readers to Charley Hanson, one of the main characters in the story of Fifth Street, the organization that facilitates quality of life within the community. Charley serves as the executive director of the organization and he embodies the critical values that orchestrate the good within the community. He treats the local diner as his workspace and interacts with community members who know him by his first name. Note that as readers get to know Charley, they will find no pretense. He is about and for the community and its residents, he reflects locality development in action—that his purpose and the purpose of Fifth Street is to develop the immediate locale and its housing, households, and infrastructure through resources and opportunities. Charley does not isolate himself in his office but reaches out to the community by walking around, sitting on benches, and occupying one of the booths of the local diner. People can get to Charley rather easily and share their concerns with him. This is what I mean by being “for the community” and “about the community.” Charley is well situated in community life. Note too that the diner is a hub—people of all ages come to the diner to visit and socialize and enjoy the good food. Pete is yet another resource to the community. He keeps things within the diner humming with human energy. He welcomes all. Welcoming is one of the essential features or qualities of a good organization. In this chapter we meet John Ferguson, a potential donor to Fifth Street Center. It is John’s education about the community that illuminates the theory and practice of the organization. Readers will come to understand the history of the community and of its anchor organization, Fifth Street Center. In this chapter, readers will come to appreciate the theory of action and its translation into practice that Fifth Street Center embodies. Readers will come to appreciate the importance of building local community assets.
