This chapter introduces the character of Mrs. James who is a neighbor that is keeping her head above the poverty line. She faces many challenges that, from her perspective, are her responsibility alone to address. She wonders how she will navigate the difficult situations in which she finds herself. Yet another character in this drama is Angela Simpson who is a staff member from Fifth Street’s law clinic. Angela is following up with Mrs. James to address the issue that brought her grandson to the attention of the clinic. Mrs. James embodies the human services archetype of the human being who is reluctant to obtain assistance. Within this archetype, the individual feels great responsibility for their own situation and their own fate. Mrs. James learned from early life that she is responsible and that it is a source of shame to rely on others. Angela reflects the archetype of the helper who engages a family or individual in an agency program and then, in the name of continuity of helping, reaches out to the household to assist in resolving the situation that brought them to the organization, in this case the clinic. Engagement and outreach go hand in hand with relationship building, that quality essential to effective helping. Angela is open to helping Mrs. James and her grandson. She takes the initiative to reach out in a friendly and supportive way. Yet another effective practice is that Angela is from the neighborhood. She grew up there and Mrs. James knows her family. Here we can appreciate the potential for trust Angela and Mrs. James can form and enrich. Readers can come to appreciate how Angela focuses on an instrumental need—she is ready to help Mrs. James improve her housing. Here we witness relationship building as an effective practice, perhaps a best practice. Given the needs this elder experiences, the chapter illustrates responsive practice—Angela is responding to the immediate needs Mrs. James reports on the intake form.
