Robust communication infrastructures are vital in emergencies where traditional cellular networks fail. This work presents a novel system for instant messaging during disasters like hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tsunami etc. using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies. The Bluetooth-based messaging module extends its range using Nordic radio frequency (nRF) modules, facilitating short-range communication in low-power scenarios, while Wi-Fi systems employ ESP8266 modules to extend the range and support chat applications. Through rigorous testing, the study demonstrates effective communication up to 700 meters for Bluetooth and 500 meters for Wi-Fi across various environmental conditions, establishing the system’s applicability in disaster scenarios. Besides this, the authors have discussed challenges and future research directions.
