Groundwater Risk and Management Plan Due to Agricultural Activities in China and South Africa

Agricultural activitiesAgricultural activities pose significant risks to groundwater qualityGroundwater quality in both the Weining Plain, China, and the KwaZulu-Natal coastal aquifers, South Africa. This chapter summarized the main water quality issues in the study areas of China and South Africa, such as hydrochemical alterations, seawater intrusionSeawater intrusion, and health hazards linked to agricultural practices, including excessive fertilizer use, untreated wastewater irrigation, and land use/cover (LULC) changes. Mitigation strategies such as precision agriculturePrecision agriculture (GPS-based nutrient management, smart irrigation), managed aquifer recharge (MAR), biochar application, and community-driven governance were proposed.
