In the present study, the topic of “passive voice in Persian language” was analyzed and studied by virtue of the minimalist approach (Bowers, 2010, Arguments as relations. MIT Press, 2018, Deriving syntactic relations. Cambridge University Press). This approach is one of the latest developments made in the framework of the minimalist program in which the shortcomings of the previous theories were eliminated and the most important achievement is to provide the Universal Order of Merge which is proposed by John Bowers (2018, Deriving syntactic relations. Cambridge University Press); An arrangement that, accordingly, can be used to organize the syntactic merge process of the sentences in different languages. This research aimed to investigate whether passive voice, in addition to active voice, is available in contemporary Persian. It sought to determine this by analyzing Persian language data within the framework of the Minimalist Program. Furthermore, the study examined whether the syntactic merging process of passive constructions in Persian, if such structures are present, follows the ‘universal order of merge’ proposed by Bowers. Using Bowers’ theoretical framework (2018), the active constructions which were present as passive sentences were studied. Determining the syntactic position of noun phrases according to their distinct semantic roles, the position of by-phrase in passive sentences, and differentiating in the way of merging of predicative sentences and passive sentences in Persian were the results of this research.
