Senegal is experiencing a significant rise in municipal solid waste generation due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and economic development. This surge highlights the urgent need for efficient and sustainable waste management solutions to mitigate environmental and public health risks. Digital technologies offer transformative potential by enabling transparent, cost-effective, and resource-efficient waste management systems. However, their adoption remains uneven—larger private and public entities lead in implementation, while smaller enterprises face challenges such as limited investment, digital literacy, and infrastructure. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) plays a pivotal role in streamlining waste operations, including route optimization, real-time tracking of waste bins and vehicles, emergency response, manpower management, and digital user-fee collection. ICT integration also enhances communication between service providers and the public through websites, mobile apps, and third-party platforms. Furthermore, innovations such as QR code-based tracking systems for households and digital house-tag mechanisms for user-fee collection can improve accountability and data-driven decision-making. Despite existing barriers, gradual and inclusive digitalization across all stages of the waste management process—especially in urban centers like Dakar—can significantly advance Senegal toward a circular economy model.
