Higher education institutions (HEI) play a significant role in promoting sustainability through teaching, research, student engagement, outreach and community initiatives. Adopting a top-down (institutional leadership) and bottom-up (students as stakeholder) approach, this chapter seeks to understand the extent to which pro-environment agenda has been adopted by select HEIs in India. Further, since extant research suggests that women have a higher level of concern for the environment than men, the study addresses the gender dimension in relation to the university and student response to environment issues. Information was obtained at two levels: (a) an analysis of reports, documents and programmes in the public domain, and (b) in-depth interviews with university students. The underlying premise of the study was to understand the role of gender in campus sustainability—from both, a leader perspective and the pro-environment attitudes and behaviour among students.
