Fluoride Regimes for Home Use
摘要
The role of topical fluorides in caries prevention is well established. The daily use of toothpastes, mouthrinses, and dietary supplements that deliver low doses of fluoride ions to the enamel subsurface forms an integral part of preventive oral care. If age-appropriate fluoride recommendations are followed, concerns regarding oral ingestion of these products and occurrence of fluoride toxicity is largely unfounded. The benefits of caries prevention due to exposure to home-use fluoride outweighs the risks of mild fluorosis and must not be a concern or restrict its usage especially in suboptimally fluoridated areas. This chapter discusses the fluoride concentration of toothpastes and mouthrinses, recommendations, and application schedules to assist the operator in curating a customized regime for every child based on factors like age, caries risk, and environmental characteristics.
