The Role of Internet of Things (IoT) in Wearable Devices for Disabled Individuals

The wearable Internet of Things (IoT) holds great promise for individuals with disabilities, offering the potential to enhance their participation in society and the workforce. To maximize these benefits, it is essential to thoughtfully address the challenges and limitations associated with integrating IoT into wearable healthcare devices. In this chapter, we present a comprehensive and effective architecture for wearable IoT that organizes and manages patient data efficiently. This approach ensures well-coordinated medical services and timely care tailored specifically for individuals with disabilities. We also explore a range of innovative wearable IoT solutions designed to address various challenges faced by these individuals, such as accessibility barriers, financial insecurity, social exclusion, educational disparities, healthcare inequities, and legal and transportation obstacles. Additionally, we discuss the technical, ethical, and implementation challenges that must be addressed to create effective wearable IoT solutions. By identifying these opportunities and challenges, we can work towards developing more inclusive solutions that incorporate machine learning techniques, advanced data analytics, input from practitioners, and blockchain technology within wearable IoT structures. These cross-sector efforts have the potential to significantly empower individuals with disabilities, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone involved in healthcare systems.
