Nutraceutical and Nanonutraceutical Formulations for Obesity, Diabetes, and Kidney Disease
摘要
The global prevalence of obesity has tripled since 1975 and is still on the rise. It can lead to many noncommunicable diseases like diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular diseases, osteoarthritis, and cancers. The pathophysiology of obesity encompasses insulin resistance, hyperinsulinemia, and chronic inflammation. In DM, there is persistent hyperglycemia resulting in autooxidation of glucose, glycation of proteins, and increased oxidative stress leading to consumption of antioxidants and their deficiency. Though a painless disease, DM can be debilitating and decrease the quality of life and affect mental health and if not controlled can add to the expenses of treatment depending on the complications. The DM complications are irreversible and progress at different rates in patients. This chapter discusses the beneficial effects of many nutraceuticals used and found beneficial like fenugreek, turmeric, gourd vegetables, green tea, conjugated linolenic acid (CLA), vitamins, minerals, hydroxycitric acid, flavonoids, lipoic acid, and polyphenolic compounds. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is marked by inflammation, scarring of normal kidney tissue, and loss of kidney function. In CKD, there is electrolyte and pH imbalance, accumulation of toxins and wastes, and hypertension. The nutraceuticals used in CKD help to regenerate cells and protect from further damage. The diet of a CKD patient is very guarded by calories and content, and the beneficial nutraceuticals are enumerated in this chapter. Patients should be cautioned about herbal preparations, their source, purity, and combination of such nutraceuticals can cause adverse drug interactions particularly in CKD patients.
