The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is fundamentally understood to be crucial to health and overall well-being since it is the collection of all organs related to the digestion of foods. In recent times, however, modern medical diagnostics have revealed the prevalence of disorders including gastritis, irritable bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, colorectal cancer, and Crohn’s disease among several others in people around the world. These digestive health issues have been managed with pharmaceutic therapies and medications which have manifested several side effects in patients after administration. Nutraceuticals are bioactive compounds derived from food materials with scientifically validated health benefits and are useful in this regard. The adoption of nutraceuticals as alternatives for GIT-based disorders is efficacious, more natural and relatively less synthetic, cost-effective, bioavailable, and with reduced side effects. More importantly, the advent of nanotechnology and its incorporation into the processing of nutraceutical formulations have been found to remarkably enhance their deliveries and bioavailabilities in their site of actions in the body. This chapter presents a comprehensive evaluation of the role of nutraceuticals for the management of multiple GIT-associated disorders. In addition, the importance of nano-processing of nutraceuticals to their functionalities is outlined.

摘要
