The number of victims of personal crimes of the elderly has been on the increase. Although the elderly (age 60 and above) are the victims of crimes such as murder, assault, physical abuse, robbery, domestic violence, and others for only a small proportion of all crimes against person, number is likely to increase in that the proportion of the entire population of the majority of the countries throughout the world is increasing. In addition, except for very young children, the elderly are the most vulnerable to be victimized by such criminal acts such as domestic violence, assault, and other violent crimes as a result of various risk factors, such as living alone, loss of physical strength, being under the care of others, isolation from family and close friends, and social economic situations, such as poverty, which increase the risk of being a victim of a violent crime. In this chapter, the trends in the types of personal victimization of the elderly are considered. In addition, the situations in which the victimization occurred, as well as the victim-offender relationships are included in this chapter. Several cases are included to illustrate different types of victimization of the elderly, and several action and educational programs are described that are used to prevent personal victimization of the elderly.
