Contemporary Innovations in Time-Honored Methods: A New Sustainable Typology for the UAE National Housing Program
摘要
In the UAE, suburbs occupy a substantial portion of urbanized land. The imperative to rethink suburban design is underscored by global concerns about climate change. The current suburban model in the UAE promotes high automobile usage, contributing to climate change. Critics have highlighted the social, economic, and environmental impacts of suburbs, particularly their low density and pedestrian accessibility. Recognizing the persistent role of suburbs in urban development, this paper argues for reevaluating suburban design instead of outright dismissal. The novelty lies in an evidence-based approach, proposing a renewed suburban model for Emirati households. The paper will present a comprehensive strategy for suburban redesign of the National Housing Program typologies in the UAE, emphasizing the need for tangible outcomes backed by quantified remodeling scenarios. The design research draws on existing critiques, such as the low public realm provision and pedestrian accessibility, to propose a transformative model for Emirati households. The paper will illustrate a project recognizing the longstanding continuity in the UAE’s housing landscape and advocating for a harmonious relationship between humanity and the environment. Principles such as densification, walkability, and enhanced social interaction are reintroduced to create a sustainable and vibrant urban living environment. Densification, a key element, is approached with consideration for cultural heritage, emphasizing plot density while safeguarding fundamental aspects of Emirati households. The project’s ultimate goal is to envision a sustainable and culturally enriching Emirati housing landscape aligned with evolving societal needs and aspirations.
