Microbial Applications for Enhancing Drought and Water-Scarcity Resilience (DWSR) in Crops

Drought and water scarcity pose serious challenges to agricultural sustainability, endangering both economic stability and food security. Meanwhile, commonly used conventional farming methods have failed to mitigate problems associated with environmental stresses. Recent studies have demonstrated the positive impact of microbial applications as sustainable and efficient methods to improve crop resistance to water constraint and drought. This chapter focuses on the role of microbial applications in improving drought and water scarcity resilience (DWSR) in crops. The paper also discusses the mechanisms used by beneficial microbes to enhance stress tolerance on plants to modulate the physiological attributes, hormonal regulation and the activation of stress-response pathways to DWSR. Withal, the paper explored the intricate use of microbe-based agricultural innovations such as nano-fertilizers, bio-stimulants, and bio-pesticides in improving stress resilience and crop productivity. The use of microorganisms offers promising opportunities to enhance DWSR in crops for sustainable agricultural practices.
