Speaking Up for the World’s Unseen: Exploring Aspects of Agricultural Ethics and Fair Trade in Tino Villanueva’s Poetry
摘要
In his poetic work, Tino Villanueva often reflects on the grim realities of his childhood, marked by his experiences of struggle as a Chicano field laborer. Among the themes that emerge in many of his collections are the adverse working conditions, poor housing, and strong racial discrimination that he and the Mexican American community of his barrio had to endure as a result of their farmworker status. Such issues constitute moral considerations critically addressed by agricultural ethics, a field of applied ethical philosophy, aiming to address concerns arising in every aspect of the agricultural praxis. Through this lens, this study focuses on select poems from Villanueva’s body of work approaching them as agricultural ethics readings in which the poet portrays important ethical issues concerning the violation of farmers’ rights, a reality most often kept intentionally hidden from view and silenced in the public discourse. It also explores how the poet’s lyrical expression serves as an awareness-raising context for critique of the abusive farm labor practices. As such, Villanueva’s poetry functions as an unstated but explicit advocacy for the establishment of fair working conditions, fair wages, and a fair treatment of the farmworkers, demands that constitute key aspects of fair trade.
