In the 2024 US Presidential race, immigration policy surged to the forefront as a key issue that helped propel former president Donald J. Trump back to the White House. This chapter maintains that far from being a novel concern, immigration concerns have always played a role in US history. In the past, US leaders have advanced policies that sought to expand or limit immigration. The current anti-immigrant sentiment therefore should not be viewed as an anomaly but a continuation of a recurrent theme. As a “nation of immigrants” the United States is torn between a posture, on the one hand, of opening its arms to the huddled masses yearning to breathe free and, on the other, striving to protect its wage levels and cultural purity. This tension has revealed itself again in the policies of the Trump administration.
