The 2006 United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. The CRPD was adopted and ratified with unprecedented support from states, including those on the African continent. In a large measure this was precipitated by the remarkable work of disabled peoples’ organizations (DPOs). However, CRPD ratification is only the first step in a long process which parties in African states must undertake to manifest the provisions of the treaty in the lived experiences of persons with disabilities. In 2009 AfriNEAD started to present its conference in eight thematic areas that were developed by compressing the 50 articles of the CRPD. This chapter first introduces the reader to the CRPD and its response to disability research and is followed by previous perspectives on disability research practices. It further highlights how AfriNEAD has played a role in the implementation of the CRPD by ensuring that research evidence produced by AfriNEAD researchers, and its conferences, is aligned with the 50 articles of the CRPD.
