The area of disability research is a contested terrain due to issues of representation. There is also the issue of disability theories that are used in the Global South that have been coined in the West and North. Issues of continuity and sustainability of research programs targeting aspects related to persons with disabilities continue to blight disability research in the region. This create patches of information with researchers who tend to repeat the same research questions without indication of plans on how research will be translated into action. Despite this, some disability researchers are giving some affirmation that disability research has managed to turn the corner. Caution is given that this turning of the corner of disability research in the region should include the drawing of an understanding and experiences from African persons with disabilities and their families. In trying to create a way forward for disability research in the region the chapter drew themes from the resolutions of five AfriNEAD disability conferences (2009–2023). These resolutions paint a picture of some of the struggles of persons with disabilities in the region, they also present some recommendations on how to improve the situation. Putting persons with disabilities central to research initiatives is seen as main approach to the improvement of disability research.
