While adulthood is characterized as a period of health and well-being, it is also a period when people begin to confront certain serious health problems, both among themselves, their family and the wider community. Most feared are those conditions that seem to be resistant to treatment, such as the new infectious diseases and cancer, as well as mental illness. This chapter considers the different social representations of these conditions and places them in their socio-historical context.
