This chapter applies current neurological research on epilepsy to make the case that Muhammad likely was afflicted with the condition. Using contemporary medical discussions of seizures, I identified instances in the hadiths where Muhammad probably manifested epileptic symptoms. They involved apparent absence seizures, focal seizures: visual and auditory auras, motor seizures, forced thinking and forced acts, fear, and suicidal ideation. It concludes with a discussion of neurotheology, which uses neurobiology to analyze religious origins, theological beliefs, and spiritual experiences.

摘要

This chapter applies current neurological research on epilepsy to make the case that Muhammad likely was afflicted with the condition. Using contemporary medical discussions of seizures, I identified instances in the hadiths where Muhammad probably manifested epileptic symptoms. They involved apparent absence seizures, focal seizures: visual and auditory auras, motor seizures, forced thinking and forced acts, fear, and suicidal ideation. It concludes with a discussion of neurotheology, which uses neurobiology to analyze religious origins, theological beliefs, and spiritual experiences.
