Between Hope for a “Better Future” and the Defeat of CTAL Unity (1944–1963)
摘要
The CTAL became a threat to the anti-communist policy of Harry S. Truman’s government. The organization was infiltrated by AFL representatives who intervened in the internal policies of governments on the continent to limit their democratic rights. Their actions deeply affected the proletariat and its organizations and provoked internal conflicts among the leaders of the CTAL Central Committee, due to their commitment to Soviet policies. What followed was the dissension and breakup of the region’s national workers’ confederations, as well as the persecution of workers by national governments. In 1953,the CTAL began to crumble; the conflict between capitalism and communism had penetrated its militants and new directions for trade unionism appeared in the region, all in a scenario where the labour movement was adapting to a bipolar world. The CTAL completed its historic mission in 1963.
