Some philosophers claim that when a subject has an experience E, then that subject is experiencing E itself. And often the same philosophers say that consciousness involves not only experiencing the experience, but also experiencing the experience as given to the subject. In this paper I argue that if one subscribes to four (controversial) key ideas, one can have a straightforward and new account of these two theses. I also show how this account helps to shed light on the introspective elusiveness of the Self and the question of the mark of the mental.
