Toward the Formation of Common Understanding of Arts and Mental Health: Questionnaire-Based Analysis of Perception on Arts and Therapy
摘要
The use of arts for healing and empowerment has spread throughout Japan in recent years, a trend broadly related to mental health. Our study defines this social phenomenon as Empowerment Arts Therapy (EAT) or Arts Empowerment (AE). In this context, the terms “arts,” “therapy,” or a combination of these words carry varying intentions and implications due to the range of perceptions they evoke. This ambiguity of perceptions will cause difficulty in communication. A questionnaire survey was conducted on university students to investigate their perceptions of these terms. The questionnaire results indicated that perceptions of the arts and therapy varied widely; in some cases, there was a significant discrepancy between students’ perceptions and dictionary definitions. Specific insights were gathered to establish a shared comprehension of the terms and concepts related to arts and therapy, which are often used ambiguously. EAT and AE practitioners must consider the diversity of perceptions, effectively communicate their activities, and gain people’s understanding of EAT and AE. The survey findings provide valuable insights into understanding and addressing the complex and elusive perceptions surrounding arts and therapy. These findings on diverse perceptions of arts and therapy can inform the development of more nuanced AI systems for natural language processing in these fields.
