What AM can manufacture does not completely show what it is. What an AM system is can help show what AM is. If AM can be used on an office desk, it has the ability to be packaged in such a way that it can work in an office environment. That is, it must have some qualities as follows: it does not have chemicals that create fumes; or it does not consist of vibrating components that create disturbances; or its size along with its subsidiary equipment is not too big to be kept only in a workshop; or it does not require special facilities that can be found only in a workshop, such as pressurized gas; or it does not have delicate components that demand extra precaution, asking for an environment different than that of an office. Though, not all AM techniques have such qualities. For example, an AM system equipped with a high power laser cannot be kept in an office environment, but an AM system that uses plastic filaments can be used. Similarly, an AM system, i.e., powder bed fusion, can be used in a remote area to make high-value metallic parts, while an AM system using filaments is not suitable for that purpose.
