One of the advantages of AM is that it gives freedom to save energy. One of the disadvantages is that it is an energy-intensive process, implying that it wastes energy compared to other processes. What does it cause: saving or wasting? AM is an energy-intensive process because it starts from a tiny building block, whether it is making a small or a large part. The size of a part is always bigger than the building block. AM does not have an advantage compared to other processes to start with a big one to make a big part. Machining starts with a big workpiece, forming processes with big sheet metal, and sintering with a big die (though a big die is not a big building block, sintering does not have the restriction to use only a small die)—all have options on how not to waste energy. AM does not have options, which is more pronounced when a big part is made and compared. For making small parts, the difference between AM and other processes will not be visible unless many parts are made.
