It is the type of AM in which material deposition occurs where external energy is directed. For example, in laser powder deposition, material deposition with the help of powder occurs at a particular place on a substrate where a laser beam as an external energy is directed. In additive friction stir deposition, material deposition with the help of a rod occurs where friction energy as an external energy is directed. Other examples are laser wire deposition, electron beam wire deposition or electron beam wire-fed deposition, wire arc directed energy deposition or wire arc additive manufacturing, etc. Directed energy deposition implies directed energy material deposition. Since deposition can happen when the deposition of only a material happens, “deposition” in “directed energy deposition” is sufficient to connote the material deposition. Therefore, “directed energy deposition” has “material” hidden between “energy” and “deposition.” Laser powder bed fusion can come under directed energy deposition.
