In injection molding (IM), a non-AM additive process, a mold is required to make a part of one design. A number of parts can be made, but all must have the same design. If a part of another design is required, a mold of another design is required. Thus, for making parts of different designs, different molds are required. In laser metal deposition (LMD), an AM process, a part is made by depositing material along a certain track as per design. If a part of another design is required, the material is deposited along another track as per the new design—it is the pattern of deposition that determines the types of designs to be made. Thus material is deposited differently, and a new part having a new design is formed. Therefore, a number of different parts can be made without having the need for different design-specific molds. This is how LMD differs from IM or how the role of a design-specific tool is different in AM and non-AM additive process.
