Composite Fabrication in Deposition Process

A composite filament having continuous fiber can make continuous fiber-reinforced composite. But the composite filament restricts the fiber-polymer ratio, which limits the properties achieved. Using separate fiber and polymer overcomes the limitation, which can occur in two ways: 1) a single nozzle to deposit separate fiber and polymer filament simultaneously and 2) separate nozzles to deposit separate fiber and filament. When a single nozzle is used, the deposited polymer is controlled by changing the temperature, feed rate, nozzle speed, and diameter. By using different fibers and polymers, various composites are formed, e.g., a wire-reinforced composite to be used as sensors. A single nozzle compared to two nozzles is simple to plan for depositing two material types (polymer and fiber) but has limitations in changing the fiber-polymer ratio. Besides, the fiber orientation in a layer is similar to the orientation of the polymer bead as the fiber remains at the core of the bead.
