A composite material is made from two material types to achieve properties not achievable by either of the two. A composite works because the load gets transferred from one material to another. For example, the transfer of load from ceramic to the metal in a ceramic composite (metal is in the minority) saves the composite from getting fractured. In a metal matrix composite, the load transferred from the metal to the ceramic saves the composite from being elongated. A composite gives high strength if there is a sufficient load transfer due to the presence of one material to form a matrix and another to disperse uniformly as an additive. If the amount of any material is low, the combination of the two is still composite but does not give the required strength. Thus there are two types of composites: one is a material (metal, ceramic) matrix composite, while the other is without “matrix.” Materials are added to increase not only strength but also other properties as well, such as thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, heat resistance, etc. In this case, the material combination is composite because of non-mechanical properties.
