AM and Machining: Waste Generation Perspective
摘要
While making an object, machining creates chips and swarf that are waste. AM does not create chips. There may be a small component of machining in AM in the form of modification or post-processing that creates chips—a miniscule amount in comparison to that created in machining. AM is better than machining because it creates a lesser amount of chips. Since AM does not intend to do machining; therefore, if AM is free from the demerit of the machining in comparison to a process that does only machining, the comparison is not equal. The comparison would have been equal if AM was doing as much machining as a process that does only machining.
