In additive layer manufacturing, a part is visualized as an assembly of layers, and, therefore, effort is done to make or have layers and then assemble them. When a part needs to be fabricated, its CAD model needs to be transformed in the form of layers. Before it is transformed (sliced), the model needs to be converted into an assembly of many small interconnected triangles, which is called tessellation that generates STL files. To slice the STL model, a horizontal plane intersects at various points and collects data at these points. The separation between two consecutive points is equal to the layer thickness.

摘要

In additive layer manufacturing, a part is visualized as an assembly of layers, and, therefore, effort is done to make or have layers and then assemble them. When a part needs to be fabricated, its CAD model needs to be transformed in the form of layers. Before it is transformed (sliced), the model needs to be converted into an assembly of many small interconnected triangles, which is called tessellation that generates STL files. To slice the STL model, a horizontal plane intersects at various points and collects data at these points. The separation between two consecutive points is equal to the layer thickness.
