An AM system generally makes parts serially, which has the potential to make large-volume production. In powder bed fusion (PBF), many parts can be made when the parts are small and the system is big. Serial production happens through two types: (1) Fabrication of a second part starts after the completion of the first part fabrication and (2) fabrication of the first layer of a second part starts after the fabrication of the first layer of the first part is completed. Non-serial production in PBF happens when the nth layer of all parts is scanned simultaneously, and not when scanning moves from the nth layer of one part to the nth layer of another. Scanning a layer is equal to fabricating a layer.
