It saves cost. Parts consolidation helps manage inventory and makes the supply chain sustainable. An example of part consolidation is when General Electric replaced 20 cast parts with a single AM part that was less expensive and more durable. Replacing many conventionally designed parts into an assembled part by AM is an achievement, but it shows there is something missing. If AM can make an assembled design, it can also make better part designs for conversion. Therefore, if AM is to consolidate parts into an assembly, it needs to utilize the opportunity to redesign the parts before assembling.
