Stair-stepping effect occurs when the vertical boundary of a layer does not match the contour of a design. Due to the mismatch, there remains a gap between the vertical boundary and the design. When the next layer is deposited, it, like the last layer, again does not match the contour, creating another gap. If these gaps, made by the consecutive layers, are seen, they look like the steps of a stair, giving the name “stair-stepping effect.” When the next layer shifts with respect to the last layer to match the contour, the shift creates a gap. Depending on the contour, the direction of the shift changes. When the contour of a design moves away from the next layer, the shift will be outwards to reach the contour. When the contour moves toward the next layer, the shift will be inwards so as not to reach across the contour.
