Origin of Overhangs

There are two types of overhangs in AM: (1) First type: an angled surface—due to stair-stepping in reverse. Example: a cylinder of increasing diameter at one side. The overhang makes an angle with a substrate. This type is due to the first type of layer arrangement, (2) Second type: a horizontal surface—due to a single layer. Example: a design made up of two upright cylinders, where one cylinder is not placed exactly on another cylinder. The horizontal displacement of the top cylinder with respect to another cylinder gives rise to an overhang that is a horizontal surface. The surface is parallel to the substrate, i.e., it does not make an angle. This type is due to the second type of layer arrangement.
