AM makes patterns that are used to make permanent or temporary molds. A permanent pattern is shown that is inside a mold box where liquid metal or ceramic slurry is poured over it. The liquid after drying takes the external shape of the pattern—this is a mold (from the pattern). Thus the shape and surface roughness of the internal cavity of the mold are due to the pattern, while its external shape is due to the mold box. The external shape thus formed does not affect the shape and surface finish of a part cast.
