AM makes molds and patterns. They are both temporary and permanent. The permanent patterns or molds are those that are not meant to be used only once. The permanent patterns are further used for making molds and temporary patterns. AM makes metallic or ceramic molds used to make cast parts. AM allows making lattice structures in a mold wall for stress management and cooling channels for thermal management during die casting. Extrusion-based AM can make a large-sized (several centimeters) compression mold using fiber-reinforced composites.
