Serious Games in Education for Students with Special Needs

Serious games offer innovative ways to enhance the educational experience of students with special needs by creating safe, engaging, and adaptive learning environments. This chapter explores the application of the SADDIE methodology in the context of students with disabilities. Based on an extensive literature review, the chapter summarizes evidence-based guidelines for the development of games tailored to different special needs, including intellectual disabilities, hearing and visual impairments, dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders, and ADHD. The findings emphasize the crucial role of participatory and iterative design processes, the development of intuitive user interfaces, adaptive content and multisensory feedback mechanisms, as well as the integration of collaborative elements to promote social skills and inclusion. Specific adaptations are explored, such as the use of spatial audio for visually impaired learners and the inclusion of emotion recognition scenarios for students with autism. By addressing both general principles and specific adaptations, the chapter highlights the transformative potential of serious games in promoting cognitive, social, and motor skills. It also emphasizes the need to integrate advanced technologies such as virtual reality and adaptive artificial intelligence to improve accessibility and effectiveness, thus establishing serious games as a crucial component of inclusive education.
