Irritating Cough
摘要
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by episodic airflow obstruction, wheezing, and dyspnea. It is distinguished from other obstructive pulmonary disorders by its reversible bronchoconstriction and underlying type I hypersensitivity reaction. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are essential in diagnosing asthma, with a reduced FEV1/FVC ratio and significant bronchodilator response confirming airflow reversibility. This case presents a patient with a chronic cough who is ultimately diagnosed with asthma. The case reviews treatment, including rescue medications and maintenance therapies, as well as what to do in the event of an asthma exacerbation. The case also considers factors such as poor living conditions and how they can influence asthma severity. Environmental and occupational factors contribute to disease severity, necessitating mitigation strategies. Effective management includes medication adherence, trigger avoidance, and patient education to optimize lung function and reduce exacerbation risk.
