Delirium is an issue that is prevalent throughout the hospital and can be difficult to diagnose and treat. Many times, when a patient is in the hospital, they can have changes to their cognition causing them to be either agitated or confused. There are many different assessments that can be utilized by staff to assess for any changes within a patient including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Brief Confusion Assessment Method (BCAM). Usually if a patient is struggling with delirium, there is an underlying cause that is contributing to this. Thorough medical work-up would be indicated to try to find this cause. If, in a patient’s delirium, they become agitated or a danger to themselves, low-dose antipsychotics can be utilized to manage patient behaviors.
