This chapter applies the framework developed in Chapters 4 and 5 to explore how research technologies influence the rate and direction of scientific discovery, distinguishing between their roles as substitutes and complements to scientists’ breadth and depth of expertise. It investigates the conditions under which these technologies increase innovation productivity and/or foster diverse research exploration, presenting empirically testable propositions to guide future research. Additionally, the chapter begins to explore the broader societal implications of these dynamics.
