This chapter introduces a conceptual framework for assessing the potential benefits of research technologies in the innovation process. The framework examines five key attributes: the type of knowledge embedded, the ability to facilitate collaboration, the impact on effort exertion, the technology’s ease of use, and its monetary cost. It highlights how these attributes shape the costs and benefits for scientists engaging with the technologies. By doing so, the framework provides a foundation for identifying the conditions that enable scientists to maximize the benefits of research technologies for the rate and direction of innovation.

摘要

This chapter introduces a conceptual framework for assessing the potential benefits of research technologies in the innovation process. The framework examines five key attributes: the type of knowledge embedded, the ability to facilitate collaboration, the impact on effort exertion, the technology’s ease of use, and its monetary cost. It highlights how these attributes shape the costs and benefits for scientists engaging with the technologies. By doing so, the framework provides a foundation for identifying the conditions that enable scientists to maximize the benefits of research technologies for the rate and direction of innovation.
