This chapter reviews recent empirical studies, highlighting that the benefits of research technologies, as outlined in Chapter 1, are not automatically realized. Rigorous causal analyses reveal that while research technologies can significantly enhance the rate and diversity of scientific innovation, they may also reduce innovation diversity by incentivizing narrower research exploitation at the expense of broader exploration. This tension, uncovered through empirical research, highlights the need to understand the factors that either maximize or constrain the potential of research technologies to drive innovation.

摘要

This chapter reviews recent empirical studies, highlighting that the benefits of research technologies, as outlined in Chapter 1, are not automatically realized. Rigorous causal analyses reveal that while research technologies can significantly enhance the rate and diversity of scientific innovation, they may also reduce innovation diversity by incentivizing narrower research exploitation at the expense of broader exploration. This tension, uncovered through empirical research, highlights the need to understand the factors that either maximize or constrain the potential of research technologies to drive innovation.
