This chapter focuses on the problems of violent juvenile offenders. It highlights the individual, familial and social/cultural factors which predispose children to engage in violent behavior. It describes the pioneering work of Dorothy Otnow lewis, who focused on the psychopathology and neuropsychological vulnerabilities of children with violent behavior. Issues of posttraumatic phenomena, dissociative experiences and disturbances and learning problem are paramount. Other features are learning disabilities, school failure, alienation from family and community, as well as institutions in general. A punitive approach only tends to exacerbate the problem in most cases. A rehabilitation approach is to be preferred. Punitie justice and inquisitorial justice models are described. The treatment needs of these chidlren are described, together with techniques for rehabilitation. Also, prevention strategies and early intervention are described.
