This chapter describes the educational ideas and approach of Rabindranath Tagore. He founded a school in India, Santiniketan in West Bengal, and his educational ideas have expanded to many parts of the world. He advocated for an education without repetitive memorizing of facts and meaningless parroting of what was learned. He proposed to foster in children a thirst for learning, to discover and to feel secure in the school setting. Tagore advocated learning through doing, rather than just by reading or hearing about something. Contact with nature and achieving a sense of serenity were useful ingredients to learn and relate to the world. Tagore advocated teaching a respect for nature and other human beings, neither of them to be exploited. Many countries and communities would benefit from adopting these principles, as many children “hate school” and feel like prisoners while they are there every weekday.

摘要
