This chapter explores the neuroscience of several experiences relevant to the clinical work with children and adolescents. Starting with the description of mirror neurons, their function and their relevance for the phenomenon of empathy. Empathy is discussed developmentally and for its role in various psychotherapeutic interventions with children. We discuss the neurophysiology of empathy and of embodiment of experiences. Tensions, traumatic experiences and intense emotions can manifest through bodily manifestations, as in functional movement disorders in the neurological clinic.
