This chapters describes the transgenerational approach to family therapy. Starting with the observations and recommendations of Murray Bowen, and describing other contributions of Boszormenyi-Nagy and Framo. With some families it is necessary to take a transgenerational approach in order to understand their present difficulties. There are unconscious expectations, attributions or a “heritage” that when brought to the surface may help the family change difficult patterns of interaction. These may consist of invisible loyalties to certain “expectations’ or “mandates” from a previous generation, assumptions as to what a husband “should do” or a wife, how children should be, the first child, a boy, a girl, etc. The chapter describes the technical aspects of the therapy including drawing the family genogram and finding relational patterns from one generation to another. It describes the differentiation of self and discovering unspoken expectations and assumptions by various family members.
